Interview or First Date?

Why Employers Need to Impress Too

Let’s talk about interviews.

You know, those often slightly awkward, sometimes sweaty-palmed sit-downs where someone tries to remember how to explain Excel skills like it’s a superpower.

Traditionally, we think of interviews as a one-way street: employers sit behind a desk like dragons guarding the company treasure while candidates tap-dance their way through competency questions, trying not to spill their water or say they’re “a perfectionist” for the 47th time.

But here’s the twist: interviews go both ways. Yes, employers, this one’s for you – you’re being interviewed too.

Just like candidates are eager to make a great impression, they’re also quietly observing and asking themselves:

  • “Can I see myself here every day?”
  • “Do they seem like a supportive team?”
  • “Is this office kitchen more ‘Great British Bake Off’ or ‘Mystery Tupperware Horror’?”

It’s not just about whether the candidate ticks your boxes. It’s about whether you tick theirs.

What Are Candidates Looking At?

  • Your vibe – Are you warm and welcoming? Or are we giving “robot with a spreadsheet” energy?

  • The workplace atmosphere – Do people smile when they walk past the interview room or look like they’ve just had a 3-hour meeting about meetings?

  • The job pitch – Are you selling the role with genuine excitement? Or reading the job description like it’s the terms and conditions of a toaster warranty?

Why It Matters

In today’s world, top candidates often have multiple options. They’re not just applying because they need a job; they want the right job. One where they feel valued, supported, and maybe even look forward to Mondays (wild, I know!).

The best interviews are a bit like great first dates – both sides leave thinking, “Ooh, I’d like to see them again.”

So, next time you’re prepping for an interview, don’t just look at the candidate’s CV and think “What can they do for me?” Ask yourself:

  • “What can we offer them?”

  • “Why would they choose us over another company?”

  • “Do they get to leave thinking ‘This place feels like home’?”

Because when the interview feels like a genuine, two-way conversation full of curiosity, connection, and maybe even the odd laugh – that’s when the magic happens.

And hey, if you wow the right candidate, you won’t just be filling a vacancy – you’ll be gaining someone who genuinely wants to be there. And that? That’s gold dust.

Remember: you’re not just hiring – you’re being chosen too.
