A Guide to Help you Interview

Pre-Interview Preparation

  • Review the candidate’s CV and cover letter.
  • Identify key experience relevant to the role.
  • Prepare specific questions based on their work history.
  • Check any employment gaps or career transitions.
  • Have a copy of the job description ready.

Opening the Interview

Objective: Put the candidate at ease and introduce the interview structure.

  •   Greet the candidate warmly and introduce yourself and any other people attending the interview.
  •   Provide a brief overview of the company and role.   Outline what the interview will cover.

  Example Questions:

  • “Tell me a little about yourself and your background.”
  • “What attracted you to this role and our company?”

Work Experience & Skills

Objective: Assess their previous roles, key achievements, and skills.

  •   Ask about previous roles and responsibilities.
  •   Explore achievements and challenges.
  •   Relate their experience to the job requirements.

  Example Questions:

  • “Can you walk me through your most recent job? What were your main responsibilities?”
  • “Tell me about a time you had to solve a difficult problem at work.”
  • “What skills do you bring that make you a strong fit for this role?”
  • “Can you give an example of when you had to work under pressure?”
  • “How do you prioritise tasks when managing multiple deadlines?”

Cultural Fit & Teamwork

Objective: Understand their work style, values, and ability to work in a team.

  •   Ask about their preferred work environment.
  •   Gauge how they handle teamwork and collaboration.
  •   Explore their approach to communication and conflict resolution.

Example Questions:

  • “What type of work environment helps you thrive?”
  • “Can you describe a time you worked as part of a team to achieve a goal?”
  • “How do you handle feedback and constructive criticism?”
  • “Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a colleague. How did you handle it?”

Role-Specific Competency Questions

Objective: Assess their technical or industry-specific skills.

  •   Tailor questions based on job requirements.
  •   Use scenario-based or problem-solving questions.
  •   Ask about software, processes, or regulations they need to be familiar with.

  Example Questions:

  • “Can you describe your experience with [specific software/tool]?”
  • “In this role, attention to detail is critical. Can you give an example of how you ensure accuracy in your work?”
  • “If you were given [specific task], how would you approach it?”

Motivation & Career Goals

Objective: Understand their long-term goals and how the role aligns with them.

  •   Check for passion and enthusiasm for the role.   Explore future career aspirations.

Example Questions:

  • “What motivates you at work?”
  • “What would make you stay with a company long-term?”

Salary & Availability

Objective: Confirm practical details about start date and salary expectations.

  •   Check notice period or availability.
  •   Ensure salary expectations align with the role.  If you are interviewing via an agency, it’s best not to discuss salary.

  Example Questions:

  • “When would you be available to start if successful?”
  • “What are your salary expectations?”

 Candidate Questions

Objective: Give them the opportunity to ask about the role and company.

  •   Allow time for the candidate to ask questions.
  •   Pay attention to their level of interest and research.

  Example Questions to Ask the Candidate:

  • “Do you have any questions about the company or role?”
  • “What would you like to know about the team you’d be working with?”

 Closing the Interview

  •   Thank them for their time.
  •   Explain the next steps and when they can expect feedback.   Ensure they leave with a positive impression.

  Example Closing Statement:

“Thank you for your time today. We really appreciate learning more about you. We’ll be in touch by [timeframe] regarding the next steps.”
